The Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering was established in 1972 as one of the constituent department of Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute, TNAU Coimbatore. The Department was formed to pursue excellence in teaching, research and development, industrial collaboration and farmer’s hands-on training. This department offers M.Tech and Ph.D degree programmes in the field of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering. The Department mainly offers courses to the Under graduate (UG) degree programmes in Agricultural Engineering, Energy and Environmental Engineering and Food Technology. It also offers basic courses for other UG and PG degree programmes of TNAU. This department is one of the pioneer in carrying out active research programmes in design and development in the field of Farm Power and Machinery covering the broad areas of Machinery Design, Human Factors in Design, Tillage and Traction Study, Sensor Based Studies and Development of Implements and Tools for Hill Agriculture. The department has well established Agricultural Machinery Research Centre (AMRC) to cater to needs of the farming community and Farm Machinery manufacturing industry. Department has also developed more than 100 technologies. Most of these technologies have been commercialized and are being extensively used by the farmers across the country. The department has 9 scientific, 22 technical and 5 administrative and supporting staff. Two major ICAR sponsored projects namely AICRP on FIM and AICRP on ESA are functioning under this department.
To offer Post Graduate (PG) degree programmes in the field of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering. The Department also offers courses to the other UG and PG degree programmes of TNAU. To conduct research and development on farm implements and machinery for different agro-climatic regions, prototype production, feasibility testing and promotion of manufacturing through industrial extension and introduction and popularization of improved farm equipment’s with the specific objectives of:
- Pursue excellence in teaching for the UG, PG and Ph.D
- Identification of mechanization gaps for future research
- Develop and adopt farm implements and machines suitable for local farm
- Conducting prototype manufacturing and feasibility testing
- Educating farmers on the use and maintenance of implements
- Training the village artisans on the fabrication and maintenance of farm equipments
- Assist local manufacturers in providing technical knowhow.
