Prof K. Soorianathasundaram with specialization in the field of Horticulture is a dedicated teacher and researcher with more than three decades of experience. He has taught 54 courses so far, catering to the knowledge and skill requirements of students of diverse academic programmes(Ph.D, PG, UG and Diploma) in Horticulture and Agriculture. As mentor and Chairperson of the advisory committee, he has so far guided 25 PG students and eight Ph.D scholars in the field of Horticulture, majority among them with specialization in fruit science. He has also served as research advisory committee member for more than 25 PG and Ph. D students. He has served earlier as member of board of studies at TNAU and as Eminent Scientist Member, Board of Faculty for UG studies, Dr YSR Horticultural University, Tadepalligudam, Andhra Pradesh. He was also involved in various committees of the university for institution development. He has developed two CD-ROM based e-modules for the courses ‘Subtropical and temperate fruit crops’ and ‘Biodiversity of fruit crops’ and also served as e-content moderator for the national syllabus of B.Sc(Hort.) course entitled Tropical and Subtropical fruits (2+1) under the NAIP –sub project.
He was a recipient of Dr. K.G. Shanmugavelu Gold Medal for his Doctoral thesis. As a committed researcher, over the years, he was associated in development and release of seven improved crop varieties. viz., TNAU Papaya CO.8, KKL 1 Butter Beans , KKL 1 Moringa Beans, KKL -1 Gladiolus, Yercaud 2 Gerbera, Yercaud 3 Rose and CO.3 Sapota. His research interest is primarily in breeding for resistance to papaya ring spot virus in Papaya and breeding and improvement of bananas for resistance to Fusarium wilt, leaf spot and nematodes. He was also associated in breeding of five improved banana hybrids ( H.96/7, H.212, H.513, NPH -02-01 and H 916) with attributes of commercial varieties along with resistance to nematodes and Fusarium wilt. He has also contributed in developing improved technologies viz., fertigation scheduling for banana and papaya and high density planting system in banana leading to 25-40 % enhanced productivity. He was associated with three International research projects and 10 National research projects during his career. He has contributed to development of cable conveyor technology for banana for improved post harvest handling and in standardizing the protocol of pre harvest spray of hexanal based nano formulation for effectively extending the post harvest shelf life of mango varieties. He has served as scheme officer in the ICAR-AICRP (Fruits) scheme at TNAU, Coimbatore; as ‘Expert member’ of Task force of PPVFRA-GOI for development of DUS guidelines for papaya; as an expert member for reviewing the research progress of the ICAR IIHR, Bengaluru & ICAR-NRC Citrus, Nagpur in their institute research council meets. He is also presently handling a project in the ‘Value addition’ theme of DBT funded project on banana for North Eastern Region of India.
He served as a regular resource person in several training programmes conducted by different departments of the University. He has published more than 85research and review articles in journals of national and international repute and as well as many book chapters.
