Welcome to the Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture of Horticultural College and Research Institute for Women, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. The outstanding and well qualified faculty members are core strength of this department. The main objectives of this department are teaching, research and extension activities in the area of commercial and ornamental horticulture. This department also address the critical challenges faced by the flower growers and farming community of this region.
Floriculture deals with production and trading of commercial flowers, ornamental plants like annual flowers, herbaceous perennial plants, climbers, shrubs, trees, foliages, cacti, succulents and their value added products. Flowers symbolize the purity, beauty, peace, love, adoration, innocence and passion. Indian floriculture witnessed commendable changes which have transformed from hobby to commercial enterprise. Floriculture industry has immense potential of contribution to the national economy.
The demand for floricultural products is growing at rate of 8-10 % at global level. The global floriculture business constitutes nearly 15 % export of flowers and floriculture products from India. With changing life styles of the people, the dimension of floriculture is extended to value addition through creation of novel products like essential oil, concrete, dry flowers, natural dyes, potpourri, gulkand, garlands, bouquets, flower arrangements, rose water, petal embedded craft papers out of natural flowers and plant parts.
The department faculty work with excellent team spirit in professional manner which leads to key research publications and consultancy in these areas.
