KVK Shop

Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of Thiruvarur District is located at Needamangalam in Nagappattinam-Gudulur NH 67. It is functioning since 2004 under Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) with the guidelines prescribed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to cater to the needs of the farming community of Thiruvarur district with the major objective of Transfer of Technology in agriculture and allied fields. Krishi Vigyan Kendra is located 30 km away from Thanjavur and Thiruvarur Towns.

Major activities undertaken

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Thiruvarur is located in the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu ie, Cauvery delta zone. Majority of the farmers in the operational area of the KVK do practice rice based cropping system. In line with the cropping pattern of the district, the KVK, Thiruvarur has tailored its activities towards the location specificity of the problems. The activities are mostly concentrated towards addressing problems and transferring knowledge pertaining to rice and rice based farming systems..

The activities of KVK was diverse, innovative and penetrative which transformed the contours of farming in Thiruvarur District. The interventions of mechanization in rice like Drum seeded rice, rice trasplanter, Cono weeder and Combine harvester has gone a long way in transforming the lives of farmers socially and economically. The success stories of farmers taking up mechanization in rice, IPM in rice, cotton and other vegetable crops, alternate crops, promotion of integrated farming system with fish and animal husbandry stood testimony to the reach of the KVK to the unreached. The KVK has been identified as Lead training centre in precision farming for seven districts due to its impressive performance in farmers field in terms of coverage of more acreage under precision farming. The rich blend of extension methods like on campus and off campus trainings, demand driven FLDs, need based OFTs, Participatory demonstrations, diagnostic field visits, farmers field schools, Campaigns, Focus Group Discussions, computer conferencing is the forte of the KVK.   The KVK has stood distinguished through establishment of demonstration units on slatted goat rearing, Backyard Poultry, Composted Coirpith Unit, Vermicompost , Rain Water harvesting system and Inland fish culture unit, mushroom shed, Model roof top nutritional garden , Model Herbal garden , Rice + fish + Azolla Cultivation,  Hydrophonix, Community shade net and IFS units

The following is the list of problems and thrust areas on which KVK, Thiruvarur has been concentrating since its inception.

Uncertainty in sustainable income from rice based cropping system. Enhancing the farm revenue through alternate farming / cropping – Fish farming, back yard poultry, mushroom production, etc.
Low yield due to pest and disease incidence. Eco friendly management of pests and diseases through IPM.
Low yield and income in the existing pattern of cultivation of vegetables. Promoting horticultural crops /varieties for enhancing the returns.

This Krishi Vigyan Kendra was awarded with “Best Stall award” among KVKs put up stalls in the 2011 Farmers day exhibitions held during State level Farmers day 2011 at TNAU, Coimbatore. The Programme Coordinator Dr.T.Senguttuvan received the award from Dr. K.K.Krishnamoorthy, Former Dean, AC&RI, Madurai. 

“Best Innovative Rice Farmer 2011”

Th. R.T.Elangovan, Manapparavai in Kudavasal Taluk of Thiruvarur District was     rewarded with “Best Innovative Rice Farmer 2011” by Directorate of Rice Research Hydrabad, on 2nd August,2011 for his innovation of Elangesh Modified Rice Drum Seeder.

“Velanmai Chemmal award ”

Th.K.Mehanathan, Eda Melaiyur, Mannargudi Taluk of Thiruvarur District received the “Velanmai Chemmal” award during State level Farmers day at TNAU, Coimbatore during 23.07.2011 to 24.07.2011 from the Honourable Minister for Agriculture for having achieved higher yield in Brinjal under Precision farming in rice belt.

“Best Innovative farmer of Thiruvarur District -2010”

Th.S.Balaguru, Vettaithidal, Karunavoor Post of Thiruvarur District was selected and invited for presentation of his innovation of “Modified SRI marker” at the National Farm innovators Meet held at KVK, Mysore during 12-13 November 2010. He was rewarded with a citation and cash award of Rs 2000/-

“Best KVK in Tamil Nadu”- Award

This Krishi Vigyan Kendra, bagged the most coveted, prestigious “Best KVK Award” for the year 2008 among 14 KVKs of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The award was received in the festive colorful function of 40th Foundation day of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University held on 01.06.2010.The activities of Thiruvarur KVK was diverse, innovative and penetrative which transformed the contours of farming in Thiruvarur district. The Programme Coordinator Dr.T.Senguttuvan received the award from Dr.Thangaraj, Vice Chancellor, TANUVAS, Chennai.
