The forest in a country plays a vital role in providing a wide range of ecological and economic benefits. Our country is one of the robust producer and consumer of wood and non-wood products. The major products includes timber, ply and panel, pulp wood, match wood, package case, railway sleeper, agricultural implements etc,. Similarly the forest in our country is also providing an wide range of non forest wood products like gum, resins, tannins, fibers, oil seeds and these non wood forest products need to be taught to the professional scholars in order to learn the scientific and technology leveraged production, processing, value addition and associated value chain processes. Against this backdrop the current programme on M.Sc. (Forestry) in Forest Products and Utilization have been implemented through theoretical and practical exposures.

Master Courses

After admission the students undergo core courses along with allied subjects for first year (two semesters) that help them understand the basics of forest products and their utilization as per the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with a total credit load of 70 credits, of which 30 credits are exclusively earmarked for their Thesis Research.

 

Master’s thesis research

After completing the courses in the first year, the students start their thesis research in third semester onwards. Each student is assigned to an experienced faculty, approved by the Dean of School of Post-Graduate Studies, who would guide the student on his/ her choice of research topic.

 

Research internship

The students are exposed to several scientific events like international conferences, workshop and symposia. Some of the students are encouraged to have internship training at various private industries like plywood, furniture, Pulp and paper, Pencil and Match industries etc.,

I had a great journey of two years M.Sc. (Forestry) programme particularly Forest Products and Utilization at FCRI campus. The PG programme is well organized and excellent. The faculties are very knowledgeable and they teach, care and support us to go ahead towards our professional interest. As an outset, I rate this programme as an outstanding.

This is a good opportunity to learn about wood products and their utility under this M.Sc. (Forestry) in FPU programme. Past two years I had an excellent practical knowledge about wood and non-wood products development. In my study period, administration was arranged more number of practical exposure visits to various wood and Non-wood based industries. My thesis research work also successfully completed with the help of chairman and staffs of this department. Now I am working as an Assistant Professor in Private college.
