India will be touching the population of China by 2027 and will become the World’s most populous country. The food grain production has to be still increased to feed the increasing population. The efforts are to be taken seriously to increase the productivity, since the population is increasing rapidly. The possibility of increasing the land area has exhausted. The only way to sustain the production is to increase the productivity per unit area by intensive use of available land for production. To increase the productivity per unit area, machineries are to be used to assure timeliness of operation and reduce drudgery to human labour. Mechanisation saves time and allows the farmer to be more flexible in his farm operations and facilitates multi and relay cropping.
The Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering was established in 1972 as one of the constituent department of Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute, TNAU Coimbatore. The Department was formed to pursue excellence in teaching, research and development, industrial collaboration and farmer’s hands-on training. This department offers M.Tech and Ph.D degree programmes in the field of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering. It also offers basic courses for other UG and PG degree programmes of TNAU. This department is one of the pioneer in carrying out active research programmes in design and development in the field of Farm Power and Machinery covering the broad areas of Machinery Design, Human Factors in Design, Tillage and Traction Study, Sensor and Drone Based Studies.
The department will continue the service to the respected farmers with new innovative machinery, offer various courses to UG and PG degree programmes and vigorous research programmes in Farm machinery and Ergonomics with highly qualified scientists and staff members.
