Professor & Head , Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry

Achievements

  • Assessed the geospatial distribution of micronutrients in Tamirabarani command area.
  • Delineated Theri lands in Southern Districts.
  • Delineated Si status in the intensively rice growing soil of Tamirabarani command area.
  • Identified and Isolated zinc solubilizing bacteria which could be utilized as the best source of zinc for maize plants in future.

Extension Activities

  • Farmers problems and queries are routinely attended and suitable solutions and recommendations are given. The Scientists regularly attend the Zonal workshops held at AC & RI, Killikulam.
  • Guest Lectures and demonstrations on Vermicompost, Panchagavya and Jeevamirtham production; Crop residue and its management; Importance of biofertilizers in rice cultivation are delivered in the block level trainings organized by NADP – ATMA.

Trainings Conducted

  • Fertilizer Orientation Programme was conducted for Final Year Undergraduates with the sponsorship from Fertilizer Association of India, Chennai.
  • Awareness and Transfer of Technology programme was conducted for Theri land farmers to improve the productivity of Groundnut.
  • Training on ‘Vermicompost Production’ sponsored by NABARD for beneficiaries of Self-help group of Cheranmahadevi.
  • Off campus training programmes were given to the farmers related to improved production Technologies (IPT) in Nichabanadhi sub basin under TN-IAMWARM.

Future Programmes

  • Remote sensing application using satellite imageries for mapping degraded lands (Salt affected lands and Theri lands)
  • Delineating and geospatial mapping of secondary and micronutrient deficiencies in problems soils
  • Management of soil related constraints.
  • Management of Sea water intrusion in coastal Ecosystem
  • Geospatial distribution of K and Cu in Tamirabarani command area
  • Assessing micronutrient deficiency in soils of Southern districts
  • Sustainable management of Theri lands
  • Silicon fertilization for intensively rice growing soils of Southern districts
  • Identification of Native microbial species of microorganisms with multi functional abilities better than the available standard strains
  • Development of land use plan for rainfed ecosystem.
  • Application of microbial fermentation in drifted seaweeds of Gulf of Mannar to use as bio-fertilizer for agricultural crops
