About Department
Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai established in the year 1965 is the second biggest constituent college of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. It is located 12 km away from Madurai city on the Madurai Trichy National Highway. The Department of Agricultural Botany is one of the oldest units established since the inception of the college and renamed as Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics in 2002. Presently this department specializes in Plant Breeding and Genetics and Cytogenetics. The faculties of this department have been trained abroad both in conventional Plant Breeding methods and modern biotechnological tools. More than 275 M.Sc. (Ag) and 90 Ph.D. students have acquired their degree in Plant Breeding and Genetics from this department.
