Development of compact cultures in cotton

A long staple cotton culture with zeromonopodial type or compact type demanded for future mechanical cultivation and high density planting was evolved and forwarded to MLT during 2019-20. It is best suited to rainfed condition and also irrigated condition. Based on this importance 20 nos. of OFT has been assigned in major cotton growing districts to facilitate data for  release proposal in shorter time. The special feature of this genotype has been outlined. This genotype also given for AICRP- National trial programme 2019-20 under rainfed condition.

The following four long staple and medium superior fibre length, high yielding cultures were developed for different environment, light to heavy soil under rainfed. Of this, one culture TVH007 given for AICRP National Trial under rainfed. Other cultures will be given for University MLT in 2020-21 since in this ensuing year already two cultures represented from our centre.

 Development of cultures and advanced lines for specific traits

The promising genotypes derived from cross combinations viz., Suraj x AKH1066, Suraj x CSH 110, Suraj x CPD 1452, Suraj x TCH1819, Suraj X KC3, CPD102 x MCU13, Suraj x CSH 2, and zeromonopodial/ compact type Suraj x TCH1819 identified for promotion to MLT. Two seasons yields trial   were conducted for the above derived cultures with CO14, KC3, TCH1819, and Suraj as checks and cultures were promoted.

The zeromonopodial/ compact type (TVH002) derived from Suraj x TCH1819 has been forwarded to MLT trial 2019-20 during the crop Scientist meet 2019. The same has been promoted to AICRP National Trial (6b-IET 2019) for compact plant genotypes. One more culture TVH 007 same has been promoted to AICRP National Trial (2b- IET 2019).

Cultures TVH 003, TVH 005 were forwarded to MLT trial 2019-20 during the crop Scientist meet 2019. Of this TVH 003 is an extra long staple culture and TVH 005 is a long staple culture. The cultures special features have already been furnished.

The families derived from cross combinations namely Suraj x SCS 1062-3, Suraj x MCU 4, KC 3 x SCS1062 were found to be promising for yield traits and crop performance to sucking pests  in rainfed condition. These families would be promoted for yield trail including Suraj X MCU4 which has been identified for evaluation sergeants as per recommendation of CSM 18. Besides, one multiple and one back cross of MC1 F5 & BC1 F5 generation were evaluated and forwarded the families for evaluation.

A total of 67 promising F7 families from 17 cross combinations of monopodial types were evaluated and observation recorded for yield traits and biotic stress. These cultures were evaluated for specific traits including yield and biotic stress.

  • Maintenance of germplasm and their utilization as parents in crossing programmes

A total of 75 working germplasm lines are being maintained at Cotton Research Station under winter rainfed conditions and are being utilized in breeding programs.

  • Evaluation of AICCIP trials and  identification and utilization of best entries

Cotton Research Station, Veppanthattai is a voluntary centre for conducting AICRP trials under rainfed conditions since 2010.  Six rainfed trials were conducted and yield and quality characters were recorded. The genotypes from 02b Trial – NDLH-2035-5, GBHV 200, CPD 1852, CNH 2052, BS 6-18, H1525, RAH 1076. NH 704; Trial 03 b – NDLH 2051-1, RAH 1071, BGDS 1033; Trial O4 B – SCS 1061, CPD 1652, BGDS 1072; Trial 06 b(N) – RAHC 1029, GISV312, CNH 1130, RHC-HD 1430, RAHC 1028, DSC 1851, ADB 670; Trial 06 b(SZ) – RHC HD 1430, CNH 1128, ABRC 1651, CNH 0962, RHC HD 1406, DSC 1651 were selected for further evaluation and to use in breeding / germplasm.
