The Department of Medicinal and Aromatic Crops was established in the year 2010.
This Department is located inside the Botanical Garden of the University.
Extensive collection of germplasm are maintained in Glory lily (32 accessions), gymnema (66 accessions), Chitrak (42 accessions), Manathakkali (42 accessions), vetiver (15accessions).
The Department has a separate mother block and nursery area wherein multiplication of medicinal and aromatic cops is being taken up.
In the nursery premises, protected structures namely, mist chambers, hardening chambers and shade net houses are available and quality planting materials are produced in medicinal & aromatic crops
The Department is involved in teaching, research and extension activities in respect of medicinal & aromatic crops.
ICAR-AICRP on Medicinal & Aromatic Crops &Betelvine scheme is being operated in the department and received best ICAR-AICRP on MAP & BV during 2017
The Department is offering courses on production, breeding and post harvest technologies in medicinal and aromatic crops for UG, PG and Ph.D. students of the University.
The Department is offering courses for ODL which include Certificate course on Medicinal plants, B.F.Tech, and PG Diploma in medicinal plants through the Directorate of Open and Distance Learning of the University.
Germplasm collection, Crop improvement, Crop management, Post harvest technology and plant protection of medicinal and aromatic crops are the mandatory areas of research of the Department.
The Department has a classroom-cum seminar hall for UG and PG students to conduct theory and practical classes
