Tiruchirapalli district is centrally located in Tamil Nadu State and lies between 78o 10’ to 79o 5’ E longitude and 10o 15 ‘ and 11o 2’ N latitude. The total geographical area of the district is 4,40,412 ha. Agriculture is the main occupation to most of the people in the district as most part of the district comes under Cauvery Delta Zone. The average net area cultivated for the past two years is 1,85,193ha out of which 1,02,799 ha are under irrigation and about 82,394 ha are under rainfed condition. The main source of irrigation is Cauvery river. In Tiruchirappalli district, 75% farmers belong to small (48.5%) and marginal (26.5%) category.
