Success Story 1 :

Ragi variety ML 365 – A Boon for Ragi farmers

1. Background : Progressive farmers from K.V.Kuppam faced loss due to the blast incidence and the same problem was addressed during the KVK training programmes and subsequently by officials of Department of Agriculture. Farmers incurred loss by cultivating local variety due to blast incidence and there by yield loss.

3. Intervention Technology : Introduction of  blast resistant variety and ICM practices
4. Impact Horizontal Spread : The Demonstration was done for 10 farmers through FLD programme in Rabi, 2017-18. Based on the awareness created, farmers were linked to KVK, Virinjipuram to obtain the Ragi variety ML 365 seeds. Fellow farmers are motivated by KVK intervened farmers, 24 farmers of K.V. Kuppam and Gudiyatham purchased seeds and cultivated Ragi variety ML 365. The horizontal spread of the area of Ragi variety ML 365 cultivation increased from 4 ha to 38 ha.
5. Impact Economic Gains : The average yield increase was recorded by the farmers to be 25.6 % when compared to control. The cost benefit Ratio obtained in the demonstrated plot was 2.87 against control plot 1.45. It is interestingly realized that indiscriminate use of pesticide was prevented and saved the cost of pesticides of Rs. 2200/ha      
6. Impact on Employment Generation : Due to increasing area and yield, 70 man days of employment were generated.

Success Story 2 :

KVK trained youth turned entrepreneur of Minor millet based cookies

1. Situation analysis/Problem statement : M.Venkatesan is a youth farmer, produced paddy and minor millets in his field at Kuruvarajapalayam village of Anaikat block. He has great interest in minor millet value addition. He approached KVK for getting ideas from KVK in the field of value addition.
2. Plan, Implement and Support : Based on intervention made on value addition of minor millet cookies through EDP, skill oriented training programme and display of minor millet cookies in the exhibitions, Thiru. M.Venkatesan started producing minor millet cookies on small scale at Kuruvarajapalayam village. He was provided all types of technical guidance and motivation by KVK for manufacturing minor millet cookies on large scale.
3. Output : Preparation of minor millet cookies
4. Outcome : The entrepreneur M.Venkatesan started producing minor millet cookies of 10 kgs in the first phase and expanded the business for a capacity of 100 kgs. Initially, he attempted to sell the produces in the local market and later he expanded the horizon to other districts to whole sale distributers. Based on the demand in the market, at present he expanded its production capacity to 540 kgs /batch of minor millet cookies and the salesman takes the products to nearby districts.
5. Impact : At present he is earning Rs. 26000/ month as net income. Two women and two man are employed for performing production and packing the minor millet cookies.

Success Story 3 :

Progesterone Impregnated Vaginal Sponge – A way for prevent loss of Valuable dairy cattle

1. Background : Progressive farmers from K.V.Kuppam block faced loss in dairy cattle rearing due to 40 % of their cows are not getting pregnant even though doing repeated artificial inseminations. The incidences of anoestrus, mineral deficiency and hormonal deficiency were addressed during the KVK training programs and subsequently by officials of Department of Animal husbandry. Farmers incurred loss by doing repeated insemination, loss of milk and by cost of feeding the dry cattle.
2. Intervention process : FLD, Method demonstrations, diagnostic Field visit and Technical advisory services
3. Intervention Technology : Introduction of Progesterone impregnated vaginal sponges and TANUVAS mineral to the infertile ans anestrous cattle.
4. Impact Horizontal Spread : The Demonstration was done for 20 number of infertile cattles of 10 farmers through FLD programme during 2017-18. Based on the awareness created, farmers were linked to KVK, Virinjipuram to get Progesterone impregnated vaginal sponges and TANUVAS mineral mixture. The infertile and anoestrus cattle were given with de-worming medicines, vaginal douche and then the Progesterone impregnated vaginal sponges were inserted in to the reproductive tract and allowed remain for 9 days. Then vaginal sponge was removed. Two days after removal of the sponges all the treated animals came to heat, the heat was observed and artificial insemination was done. The 60 percent of the animals treated for infertility got pregnant. Fellow farmers are motivated by KVK intervened farmers, 35 dairy farmers of K.V. Kuppam and Gudiyatham purchased TANUVAS mineral and received Progesterone impregnated vaginal sponges. The horizontal spread of the area of this technology increased from 20 animals to 35 numbers of animals.
5. Impact Economic Gains : The Progesterone impregnated Vaginal Sponges induced Estrus cycle with 10 days and induced heat in all the treated cattle. The animals were infertile since 286 days with an average of 6.25 number of insemination. The extension functionaries are also faced difficulty in treating these kinds of cattle. But the Progesterone impregnated Vaginal Sponges induced heat and the animal got pregnancy with an insemination. The conception percent in the treated cattle was 60 percent. The averafe number of Artificial insemination per conception was 1.33.Due to this technology the value of animals increased from Rs15, 000/- to Rs 53, 500/- . The farmer can get a calf and 2150 litre of milk from a pregnant cow.

 

6. Impact on Employment Generation : Due to increasing two number of pregnant cows per farmer,  120  man days of employment were generated.
