Biogas Development and Training Centre

Biogas Development and Training Centre (BDTC) is being operated in the Department of Renewable Energy Engineering, since 1982. The scheme funded by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is aimed at popularizing biogas technologies and its adoption in rural areas. This centre is the nodal agency for biogas development and training in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands. The centre provides training programmes on biogas plant construction and biogas production, biogas utilization at domestic, community, industrial and commercial level. The training programmes offered by BDTC are,

  • Staff training
  • Turnkey workers training
  • Refresher / Construction cum maintenance training
  • Biogas skill development training

Users’ one day training

Users’ one-day training aims in creating awareness and promoting biogas as a primary fuel for varied applications in rural as well as urban demographics. Through this training, awareness on biogas plant operation, maintenance and day to day up keep of biogas plants along with financial assistances available from the government will be acquired. Villages having biogas plants in operation or newly commissioned will be selected as venue and requires 40-60 beneficiaries per training. Staff training

Staff training is organized to expose functionaries of the implementing agencies about diverse aspects of biogas technology and its benefits. The participants who undergo this training would meet their counterparts of other departments and share the field experience and related information.The training session addresses the following key areas,

  1. Design, material selection and accessories of approved models of biogas plants.
  2. Financial assistance, disbursement of subsidy and utilization of funds.
  3. Details of biogas stoves, burners and appliances.
  4. Identification of faults and their rectifications.

Turnkey workers training

Turnkey workers training is conducted for unemployed youths to equip with technical skills to venture into entrepreneurship in biogas sector. This training provides requisite information on construction of biogas plants and post installation services. Training contents are focused towards:

  1. Importance and benefits of biogas program
  2. Operation and Maintenance of biogas plants
  3. Scenario of Indian biogas program
  4. Technological advances in biogas technology

Refresher / Construction cum maintenance training

The refresher/construction cum maintenance training is intended for masons with independent work experience in civil construction sector.The purpose of this training is to create a cadre of masons and technicians equipped with skills in the construction and maintenance of approved biogas plant models.The training sessions cover the following areas,

  1. Description of different models of biogas plants
  2. Selection of site and material requirements for biogas plants.
  3. Construction methodologies for approved biogas models
  4. Testing of gas and water leakage.

Biogas Skill development training

The core objective of skill development training is to empower the individuals by enabling them to acquire technical and entrepreneurship skills in biogas technology. Focus will be placed in encouraging women entrepreneurs and farmer producer groups, which would help in developing entrepreneurship specially in biogas sector.
