Dean In-Charge

Dr. A. Velayutham began his career in TNAU as Assistant Professor (Agronomy) during 1988 and became 4th Dean of Agricultural College and Research Institute, Eachangkottai, Thanjavur in the year 2020. He was conferred with Best NSS programme officer Award by Government of Tamil Nadu during 1990-1991, T. Konda Reddy Shield and Medal for Agronomy by MASU during 2005, Best Research Award by TNAU during 2006 and National Award for e-governance by Government of India for 2010-2011.

As an Undergraduate teacher for more than 31 years, Post graduate teacher for 21 year and Doctoral teacher for more than 17 years did the best of his ability for the student community. He has guided 14 M.Sc., Scholars and 2 Ph.D., scholars in the field of Agronomy especially in Weed Management and cropping system research. Being a teacher, he served as UG, PG, Ph.D teacher, ODL teacher, Year coordinator, Group facilitator for All India tour as well as RAWE programmes.

Being a researcher, he has completed more than 15 University Research projects in the field of Agronomy, extended his service in the All India Coordinated Research Projects on Pulses for more than 9 years and obtained 16 externally funded projects as PI and Co-PI. During his research carrier, he had 3 Venture Capital Schemes (VCS) for revenue generation and released four varieties (Red gram CO (Rg) 7, Fodder Sorghum CO 31, Fodder Cowpea CO 9, Fodder Cowpea TNFC 0926) and two technologies. He has published 47 research papers in National journals, 15 research papers in International journals, Books, Book Chapters, Conference papers and many more popular articles.

During his service, he actively involved in conducting training programmes, farmer’s Mela’s, Awareness programmes etc. He also conducted FLDs and OFTs on pulses and forage crops, Involved in the development of Mobile App for TNIMP and participated in several radio programmes, TV programmes and many field visits as resource person.

He worked at various constituent colleges of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University at various administrative positions and served in UG Admission committee, Technical officer (Security), Professor and Head, Farm Manager, Head TNIAMP cell, Warden, Academic Council Member, PG board of studies member, NSS programme officer and member in various academic /research /extension /administration and extracurricular activities event organizing committees.

He has visited Philippines, USA, Vietnam and China to attend international conferences on Agriculture.

Dean’s Message

Rice is the staple food for Asian people and it the life for farmers of erstwhile Thanjavur District called as granary of Tamil Nadu. Rice is cultivated in an area of 11 lakh ha in Cauvery Delta Districts. The Intensive Agricultural District Programme was operated in the district considering its importance of rice cultivation. The long felt dream of establishing an Agricultural College in Thanjavur District became true in 2014 when the Agricultural College and Research Institute was sanctioned and established at Eachangkottai in Thanjavur district.  This college is currently attracting students not only from Cauvery delta districts but from through out Tamil Nadu. This college will certainly serve the farmers of Cauvery Delta districts through identification of location specific technologies for rice and based crops in future apart from providing agricultural education to the students.
