This station is located at latitude and longitude of 90 21 N and 780 22 E with an altitude of  39.83 m above MSL. The research station has an area of 9.58 ha.   The soil type is clay loam with pH of 8.0. The average maximum temperature is 31.5 o C and the minimum temperature is 23.1 o C with annual mean rainfall of 840 mm.  Since its inception, this research station has made significant progress in rain fed rice research to improve the yield and drought tolerance suited for the rain fed and semi-dry ecosystem of southern districts.  The station is situated on the southern bank of the Vaigai river on Madurai-Rameswaram National Highway.
