Since its inception, the department of Agricultural Economics at Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai is bearing tripart work Teaching, Research and Extension. The department is bestowed with experienced teaching faculty, more than 30 years of teaching both in Undergraduate and Post graduate levels. Our faculty teachers are always been a source of inspiration and an instrumental for changing the mind-set of the students who under the “prejudice of economics is not essential” for a student of biological sciences. We have track record of passed out students of this department secured highest positions in formal and private organization. It is worth mention to say, few staff worked in development projects in LDC’s as expatiate expert. The highlights of the department in research to say, collaborated external funded schemes from Ford Foundation, New Delhi, ICAR, ODA of UK & NABARD. The thrust areas covered in the external schemes were equity and productivity in river irrigation system, coping behaviour to water scarcity, credit for rural development etc. The department oriented farmers of southern Tamil Nadu in disseminating market inteligency through price discovery. Farmers are provided with price forecast from the APP developed by Domestic and Export Marketing cell. The department is poised to take up macro-modeling of vulnerability, resilience and adoption to climate change of sustainability, livelihood security and crop planning of dry land farmers, structural changes in rural employment, Development of mobile APP for millets, Impact studies on technologies and varieties developed from the institute and supply chain management of farm produce in years to come.
