The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) had its genesis from establishment of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Madras, Tamil Nadu, as early as 1868 and it was later relocated at Coimbatore.

The Directorate of Open and Distance Learning was established during April 2005, a pioneering attempt among the State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) with a prime objective of imparting technical knowhow and do how on agro technologies and agro based industries to various segments of learning who lack opportunity in campus based education. This Directorate concentrates its effort on Distance Education in addition to non-formal and continuing education.
Diploma programmes (12 ongoing) are offered through Distance Learning Mode for those aspiring for knowledge updating, self employment and entrepreneurship development. The primary target groups are Farmers, Employees of Government / Private sectors, field service providers from local communities and unemployed youth, entrepreneurs, NGO’s and school dropouts.
