Introduction

The Centre for Plant Protection Studies (CPPS) was established in April, 1984 in TNAU to coordinate and strengthen teaching, research and extension activities in Plant Protection and Sericulture. Agricultural Entomology, Plant Pathology, Plant Nematology and Sericulture are the constituent departments of this Directorate.

Vision and Mission

  • To offer and strengthen facilities for education in Plant protection
  • To identify constraints in an existing pest, disease and nematode management practices through operational research projects.
  • To improve pest surveillance and damage assessment methods to develop cost effective, ecologically sustainable pest management systemsfor agricultural, horticultural, forestry and sericigenous crops
  • To facilitate for the effective transfer of plant protection technologies and development of entrepreneurship among stake holders.

Education

  • Offering courses on plant protection aspects to UG students of B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture, B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry, B.Sc. (Hons.) Sericulture, B.Tech. (Biotechnology), B.Tech. (Bioinformatics), B.S. (Agribusiness Management) and B.Tech. (Agricultural Information Technology).
  • Offering both Post graduate and doctoral degree programmes in the field of Agricultural Entomology, Plant Pathology, Nematology and Sericulture.

Future Endeavours

  • Taxonomic studies and molecular characterization of major insect, mites, plant parasitic nematodes and plant pathogens including invasive pests diseases and nematodes of economically important crops in Tamil Nadu.
  • Development of management strategies including molecular approach for the major pests, diseases and plant parasitic nematodes of Agricultural and Horticultural crops in Tamil Nadu
  • Development of biopesticides, botanicals, antagnostic pathogens and entomopathogenic nematode based formulations and patenting products.
  • Development of novel methods of pest, disease and nematode management.
  • Developing and establishing collaborations with National and International Institutes.
  • Developing digitalized gadgets for the identification, forewarning and management of pest, disease and nematode of major crops to the farmers.
