My recent visit to the Sixth International Rice Congress (IRC) at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Manila was an enriching journey. With a primary focus on “Heralding an era of low carbon footprint rice hybrids” at the International Hybrid Rice Symposium (IHRS) under IRC, the conference provided a dynamic platform for global discourse and collaboration. Delivering my research findings through an oral presentation at the IRC marked a pivotal moment in my academic endeavours. The experience not only enriched my presentation skills but also strengthened my confidence in expressing scientific findings in an international forum. Engaging with fellow researchers and experts further broadened my perspective on the global challenges and opportunities in rice research.
Attending the training on “Recent advances in rice breeding” was a highlight of my visit. The emphasis on ‘Green Super Rice’ breeding and the ‘One Rice’ breeding strategy underscored the importance of sustainable practices in rice cultivation. The session on Research Proposal Writing led by Dr. Jauhar Ali was immensely beneficial. His comprehensive breakdown of the components of a research proposal, coupled with insights into SMART objectives, provided a roadmap for crafting impactful research proposals. Exploring the International Rice Gene Bank and the Grain Quality and Nutrition Centre Lab was definitely a standout experience during my visit. Witnessing the meticulous maintenance of seed collections and the ground-breaking research on diabetic-friendly low glycemic index rice underscored IRRI’s dedication to addressing global food and health challenges.
Beyond the scientific pursuits, my time at IRRI allowed me to immerse myself in the rich cultural and social tapestry of the Philippines. Interacting with the local community and experiencing Filipino hospitality added depth to my overall experience and enriched my understanding of the interconnectedness between science and society. An unforgettable aspect of my trip was the chance to engage with leading experts and researchers in the realm of rice breeding. Their wealth of knowledge and expertise provided me with invaluable guidance and perspective on the practical implementation of rice breeding techniques. Through insightful discussions and hands-on training sessions, I gained a deeper understanding of the intricate processes involved in developing high-yielding and resilient rice varieties. The conference and training program at IRRI left a lasting impression on me, both professionally and personally. I gained a comprehensive understanding of the latest tools and methodologies shaping the future of rice breeding.
