About TNAU
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), a century old premier institute providing Higher Education in Agriculture. TNAU had its genesis from establishment of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India as early as 1868 which was later relocated at Coimbatore during 1906. In 1920, the college was affiliated to the University of Madras with the introduction of a three-year degree programme. Till 1946, the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore was the only institute for agricultural education for the whole of South India. In 1958, it was recognized as a Postgraduate Centre for offering Masters and Doctoral degrees. It is a non-profit public higher education institution.
TNAU has the pride of being the first State Agricultural University (SAU) to be accredited by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Recognizing the merits, the ICAR awarded The Best Institution and The Best Performing University to this institute.
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)-2019 of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), GOI ranked TNAU as the second among the State Agricultural Universities in India. Moreover, TNAU figured 68th and 44th place in ‘Overall’ and ‘Universities’ categories, respectively and Ranked 105th in QS-BRICS. The ICAR has accredited Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore for a period of five years i.e. up to 31 March 2023.
About SPGS
Postgraduate study in TNAU is a very special experience. The courses are offered in the university campus and in its constituent colleges. The students on completion of the course requirements have the opportunity to take up their research in any institute / industry in India. As an established research-intensive university, TNAU has excellent link with reputed national and international institutes for student exchange programme.
School of Postgraduate Studies offers Masters programs, M.Sc.(Ag.) / M.Tech.(Ag.) in 33 disciplines, Doctoral programs in 29 disciplines.
From the Academic Year 2019 – 20,
Re – Introduced Semester system of education.
- Introduced uniform schedule for academic calendar across the University both for Master’s and Doctoral programmes.
- Each postgraduate course starts simultaneously on August 16 (Monsoon Semester) and January 27 (Pongal Semester).
- This ensures uniform commencement of academic programmes across the University,
- Encourages M.Sc. students to complete their degrees within the stipulated period of two academic years
- Allows zero time loss enrollments to Ph.D. courses and
- Makes available bright young M.Sc. students for admission to Ph.D. courses.
- Each semester will be of 105 days duration.
Students from all over India and overseas seek admission. International Students from Nigeria, Rwanda, Sudan, Afghanisthan, Kenya, Botswana and Vietnam are enrolled students at this university.
Scientific Manuscript Editing and Publication (SMEP) Cell is an additional facility extended in this office to support Scholars for publication of their research article in a suitable science indexed journals.
This office regularly conduct workshops on planning, executing and writing an international quality Ph.D thesis and original research papers and on scientific writing skills for Masters and Doctoral Scholars.
Several Databases like Web of Science, Scopus and Genome station are provided with free access privilege to Masters and Doctoral scholars to explore in depth data, resources and information.
At National and International level, 35 adjunct faculties are identified and they are periodically delivering special lectures to the students of TNAU. Several Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) are signed with international and national institutes to promote the academic and research.
Teaching Initiatives and Support
TNAU has a long tradition of excellent teaching and the proof is thatmany of its alumni nostalgically recollect their learning experiences.
It is a pioneer in the development of e-content for Agricultural educationin India by hosting e-learning resource materials for 381 courses.
It has a formal Internal Quality Assurance mechanism to ensure qualityteaching, learning, curricula, research and administration in the University.
PG programmes offers choice based credit system to scholars andprovides wide choices of specialization courses to students.
Smart Class Rooms are equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity, computers, LCDprojector, Smart Board, Podium, TV monitor, etc. providing the muchneeded modern learning experience.
