It began as an Agricultural School in Saidapet, Chennai, in 1868, moving to Coimbatore in 1906. Affiliated with the University of Madras in 1920, TNAU initially offered a three-year degree program, serving as the sole agricultural education institute in South India until 1946. It evolved into a higher education hub, becoming a Postgraduate Centre in 1958 and offering Masters and Doctoral degrees. As a non-profit public institution, TNAU was the first State Agricultural University (SAU) accredited by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). It has received numerous accolades, including Best Institution and Best Performing University by ICAR. In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), TNAU ranked fifth among State Agricultural Universities in India, 68th in the ‘Overall’ category, and 44th in the ‘Universities’ category. Internationally, it ranked 105th in QS-BRICS. The ICAR accreditation of TNAU, Coimbatore, for five years highlights its commitment to academic excellence and contributions to agricultural research and education until March 2023.
