Somasundaram holds key roles in agricultural advisory and research groups at Doordharshan Kendra, Chennai, and IFGTB, Coimbatore. He also contributes as a Research Council Member at the Coconut Development Board in Kochi and serves on various committees in the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. Somasundaram ‘s accolades include being named Best Coconut Grower of Tamil Nadu in 1991 and receiving the Velanmai Chemmal Award in 2005, among others
