Varieties Released

Coconut Research Station, Aliyar Nagar has released six varieties, three each of coconut and groundnut for the benefit of the farming community. The salient features of the varieties and their popularity is presented hereunder.

  1. Coconut – ALR (CN) 1

    Year of Release    : 2002

    Salient Features   :

  • Selection from Arasampatti tall
  • Average yield – 125 nuts/palm/year after stabilization
  • Maximum yield – 183 nuts / palm / year
  • 48 %, 88 % and 66 % yield increase over WCT, ECT and VPM 3 respectively
  • 310 ml of tender nut water per nut
  • 5 kg copra / palm / year
  • Moderately resistant to basal stem rot, stem bleeding disease and bud rot

     Popularity          :

The variety has replaced West Coast Tall in majority of the coconut growing districts of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. Since its release in 2002, more than 2,00,000 seedlings of this variety were produced at CRS, Aliyar Nagar and sold to the farmers which illustrates the demand of this variety among the farmers

  • Copra yield – 14 kg /palm /year
  • Oil content – 64.7%
  • Drought tolerant

 Popularity           :

This variety is preferred by the coconut growers under water scarce conditions. The farmers of Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts who do not have access to canal irrigation prefer this variety because of its drought hardy nature. Since its release in 2010, more than 7000 seedlings were produced at CRS, Aliyar Nagar and distributed to the farmers

  1. Coconut – ALR (CN) 3

     Year of Release    : 2012

      Salient Features   :

  • Dwarf variety with orange colored nuts exclusively for tender nut purpose
  • Selection from Kenthali Dwarf
  • Average yield – 86 nuts/palm/year
  • 500 ml of tender nut water /nut
  • Total soluble sugars – 5.2%
  • Rich in potassium – 190.2 mg per 100 g.
  • Tolerant to Eriophyid mite

     Popularity            :

The variety is a best substitute for Chowghat Orange Dwarf. There exists huge
demand for these seedlings from the farmers owing to the consumer preference
because of its attractive appearance and good yield of tender nut water.

  1. Groundnut – ALR 1

     Year of Release    : 1987

     Salient Features   :

  • Virginia Bunch type
  • Parentage : Hybrid derivative – POL 2 x PPG 4
  • Duration : 120 days
  • Resistant to rust and late leaf spot diseases
  • Suitable for rainfed conditions
  • Pod yield : 1840 kg/ha (Irrigated)

Popularity            :

ALR (Gn) 1 is cultivated over an area of 100 acres by the farmers of Pollachi tract especially in the areas which are prone to rust and leaf spot diseases.  It served as one of the parents for the evolution of ALR (Gn)3.

  1. Groundnut – ALR 2

     Year of Release    : 1994

     Salient Features   :

  • Spanish Bunch type
  • Parentage: Selection from ICGV 86011
  • Duration: 105 -110 days (Medium duration)
  • Possess seed dormancy for a period of 15 days
  • Rich in oil content (52%)
  • Field tolerance to leaf miner, leaf hopper and thrips
  • High tolerance to rust and late leaf spot diseases
  • Suitable for both irrigated and rainfed conditions
  • Plants remain green even at maturity and hence suitable for green fodder
  • Pod yield: Rainfed: 1740 kg/ha; Irrigated: 2550 kg/ha

     Popularity            :

                        This variety was cultivated over an area of 50 acres and is preferred by
the farmers because of its resistance to pests and diseases.

  1. Groundnut – ALR 3

     Year of Release    : 1999

     Salient Features   :

  • Spanish Bunch type
  • Parentage: Double cross derivative of R 33-1 x ICGV(FDRS)68 x Nc Ac.17090 x ALR 1
  • Duration: 115 days
  • Possess 15 days fresh seed dormancy
  • Rich in oil content (50%)
  • Resistant to rust and moderately resistant to late leaf spot diseases
  • Resistant to leaf hopper and thrips
  • Haulms remain green till harvest and suitable for green fodder
  • Shelling percentage : 69 %
  • Average Pod yield: 1939 kg /ha

      Popularity            :

ALR (Gn) 3 is preferred by the farmers because of its green haulms even at
maturity. Nationwide, this variety is preferred by the researchers as a parent in
breeding elite genotypes with enhanced tolerance to pests and diseases.

GROUNDNUT VARIETIES RELEASED

Central Release

  • Based on the performance at CRS, Aliyar Nagar and CPCRI, Kasaragod, the coconut genotype SanRamon has been released as Kalpa Shatabdi by CPCRI during 2016. The variety is characterized by large fruits with average copra out turn of 272.9 g and tender nut volume of 612 ml nut-1 (6.2o brix) and average nut yield of 105 nuts per palm per year. The copra out turn of  the variety is 28.65 kg per palm per year which is 61.40 % higher than the copra yield of WCT (local control)
  • Groundnut culture ALG 06-320 which is moderately drought tolerant with a potential pod yield of 2741 kg /ha and kernel yield of 1931 kg/ ha was identified for release as a variety for zone III-b (Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh) by ICAR – AICRP (G)
