Laboratories

The following are the list of major works being carried out in each laboratory at TRRI.

Plant Pathology

  • Visualization and documentation of total DNA or PCR products of gene of interest of fungi or bacteria electrophoresed in agarose gel.
  • Visualization and documentation of protein profiles of fungi or plant samples electrophoresed in NATIVE polyacrylamide gel.
  • Isolation of fungi and bacteria from plants, insects and soil.
  • Mass production and sale of bacterial and fungal biological control agents such as Pseudomonas fluorescens (Pf1) and Trichoderma asperellum
  • Mass production and sale of mushroom spawn (Oyster and Milky).

Agricultural Microbiology

  • Mass production and sale of liquid and carrier based bio-inoculants, viz., Azospirillum, Phosphobacteria, Potash bacteria and Methylobacterium.

Agricultural Entomology

  • Identification of volatiles from plants and insects.
  • Bioassay studies against major pests.
  • Screening of stem borer, brown plant hopper, Black bug can be done in artificial net house condition.

Plant Breeding and Genetics

Quality lab

  • Grain quality analysis for rice and pulses
  • Estimation of starch, crude fibre, ash and protein from the rice grain
  • Assessment of starch and starch related parameters
  • Estimation of micronutrients viz., Iron and Zinc
  • Phyto chemical analysis
  • Hulling, milling and head rice recovery without external addition of Iron and Zinc can be done

Molecular lab

  • PCR amplification of DNA samples from plants
  • Gel electrophoresis for the molecular separation of DNA samples or PCR products of gene of interest from plants
  • Visualization and documentation of total DNA or PCR products of gene of interest of fungi or bacteria electrophoresed in agarose gel.
  • Visualization and documentation of protein profiles of fungi or plants electrophoresed in NATIVE polyacrylamide gel.
  • Long term preservation of DNA samples or PCR products of gene of interest from plants can be possible upto -80o

Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry

  • Determining the nutrient availability in soil and total nutrient in plant produce.
  • Analyzing the soil fertility parameters viz., soil reaction, soluble salt content, total organic carbon and its pools, available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable cations, soil enzymes (soil dehdrogenase, phosphatase, urease) and crop nutrition parameters such as total nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sulphur.

Seed Science and Technology

  • Production and distribution of different classes seeds of paddy and pulses
  • Measuring the moisture content of seeds by digital moisture meter and counting seeds with the help of seed counter
  • Deionization of water using double distillation unit

Agro Meteorological Observatory

Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute (TRRI), Aduthurai has a well and scientifically maintained Agro Meteorological observatory and the weather parameters are being recorded daily at prescribed time (as indicated by the IMD, Pune). The observatory was installed in the year 1929.

  • The following weather data are recorded daily at this observatory.Air temperature (Maximum and Minimum), Relative humidity, Soil temperature (5, 10, 20 and 30 cm depth), Wind direction, Wind speed, Bright sunshine hours, Solar radiation, Evaporation, Rainfall and Dew.
  • Based on weather forecast received from IMD, Pune forecast warning disseminated to farmers through All India Radio, Kisan Portal and SMS.

Agronomy

  • Estimation of methane emission from the rice field throughout the year.
