Prelude
The students can get advanced exposure on botany, climate and soil, propagation, after cultivation, harvesting and processing including plant protection aspects in Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops. Besides, they can learn about the latest technologies involved in plant breeding in the above crops. By doing research work in crop management, breeding and plant protection aspects in the above crops, the students will be specialized in the above crops
Why this programme?
- To produce scholars capable of multi tasking in different aspects of crop improvement, production and post harvest management of plantation, spices, medicinal and aromatic crops.
- To develop their skills for employment or for entry into an advanced training/ degree programme through teaching latest production technologies, growth, development, breeding, post harvest technologies and value addition of plantation, spices, medicinal and aromatic crops.
- To take up basic and applied research in plantation, spices, medicinal and aromatic crops for Ph.D dissertation
Study Programme
The Doctoral programme in Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops has been designed following the UGC guidelines. The course imparts:
- As the Ph.D scholars are exposed to wide array of crops, their technical expertise is required in the area of Entrepreneurship, Processing, Value addition, as scientist and as technocrats in the field of spices, plantation, medicinal and aromatic crops
- There is demand for trained man power of these crops in banking sector and as policy makers for State and Union Government.

Doctoral in Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops course
Doctoral Courses
After admission the students undergo a set of courses that help them understand the basics of Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops as per the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with a total credit load of 75 credits, of which 45 credits are exclusively earmarked for their Thesis Research.
Doctoral thesis research
After completing the courses in the first year, the students start their thesis research. Each student is assigned to an experienced faculty, approved by the Dean of School of Post-Graduate Studies, who would guide the student on his/ her choice of research topic
Research internship
The students are exposed to several scientific events like symposia and conferences. Many are encouraged to have internship training at other institutes for a couple of months, either in India or abroad.
Student Experiences
The department has good infrastructure such as department library, micro-analytical laboratory with advanced equipment. Also, the coconut nursery owned by the department has a huge collection of coconut germplasms. Apart from it, wide variety of turmeric, coriander and fenugreek collections are available which could be utilized by the students for their course and research works. The courses offered by the department will be benefitted to the students for gaining knowledge in different aspects to get wider opportunities in the field of research and teaching.
The department of plantation, spices, medicinal and aromatic crops is one of the major departments of horticulture. It is having wide opportunities in different aspects. During my course and research work learnt advances in cultivation and breeding aspects of various crops of plantation and spices through practical experience. The course teachers are very friendly with good knowledge in the subject. The department provides good laboratory facilities to carryout research in a hassle-free way. It would be helpful if there is a concession in service charges for accessing advanced instruments such as HPLC, HPTLC, MAS, GCMS etc., for the university students.
