Prelude
- Remote Sensing and GIS is an emerging field of study that includes Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information System (GIS), and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). These technologies enable us to acquire data that is referenced to the earth and use it for analysis, modeling, simulations, and visualization. The output from theses technological applications allows us to make informed decisions on the monitoring and management of natural resources.
- Remote sensing, GIS and GNSS also called Geospatial technologies has become an essential part of everyday life and thus, the programme is offered to suit to the need of the growing demand by government and industry to manage natural resources and disasters specifically agriculture.
Why this programme?
- To educate the students and research scholars on the basics and applications of Remote Sensing and GIS in agriculture
- To generate and assemble geo-spatial data on natural resources like soil, crop and water resources for the benefit of the policy makers, researchers, extension officials and farmers
- To support Human Resource Development in various agricultural applications of Remote Sensing, GIS, GNSS & Drones in agricultural sector
Study Programme
The Masters programme in Remote Sensing and GIS has been designed following the UGC guidelines.
- To inculcate the basic concepts of remote sensing and physical principles of aerial photographs and satellite remote sensing.
- To create a strong basis for visual image interpretation and application in agriculture.
- To provide a strong understanding of the conceptual and technical understanding of GIS and GNSS.
- To make the students to handle spatial data, to do GIS analysis and modelling
- To introduce the students to the theory of thematic cartography.
- To teach important aspects of thematic map and procedure of creating a thematic map.
- To learn various map types and to represent a map with least errors or distortion.
- To Provide the student with the fundamentals of digital image processing.
- To Introduce the students to digital image processing techniques and and basic analytical methods to be used in image processing.

Master’s in Remote Sensing and GIS course
Master Courses
After admission the students undergo a set of courses that help them understand the basics Remote Sensing and GIS as per the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with a total credit load of 70 credits, of which 30 credits are exclusively earmarked for their Thesis Research.
Master’s thesis research
After completing the courses in the first year, the students start their thesis research. Each student is assigned to an experienced faculty, approved by the Dean of School of Post-Graduate Studies, who would guide the student on his/ her choice of research topic
Research internship
The students are exposed to several scientific events like symposia and conferences. Many are encouraged to have internship training at other institutes like Regional Remote Sensing service Centre, ISRO, Bengaluru; Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Trivandrum and State Remote Sensing Centres for a couple of months, either in India or abroad.
