Prelude

The plantation and agroforestry in our country has growing significant attention and attraction among the all stake holders as a source of alternate land use system to create self sustainability in raw material security besides catering to the needs of ecosystem and environment stability. For this purpose, there is a growing demand to inculcate the art and science of modern silviculture and multifunctional agroforestry systems. The art and science of growth and development of trees through silviculture technology for wide range of species assemble for varied ecosystem received greater priority. Similarly the agroforestry models and systems need to be taught judiciously incorporating professional regulation, cultural and supporting services. Against this back drop Forest College and Research Institute is implementing a Post Graduate programme M.Sc. (Forestry) in Silviculture and Agroforestry judiciously incorporating all facets of Forestry and Agroforestry in order to create professional man power requirement to handle and manage the forest, plantation forestry and agro forestry.

Master’s in Silviculture and Agroforestry course

Master’s Courses

After admission the students undergo a set of courses that help them understand the basics of Silviculture and Agroforestry as per the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with a total credit load of 60 credits, of which 20 credits are exclusively earmarked for their Thesis Research.

Master’s thesis research

After completing the courses in the first year, the students start their thesis research. Each student is assigned to an experienced faculty, approved by the Dean of School of Post-Graduate Studies, who would guide the student on his/ her choice of research topic

 

Research internship

The students are exposed to several scientific events like symposia and conferences. Many are encouraged to have internship training at other institutes for a couple of months, either in India or abroad.

Student Experiences

I am K. Lalithambigai Studied M.Sc ( Forestry) – specialization in Silviculture and agroforestry during the academic year of 2019 -2021.  It provides strong foundation in a number of core academic disciplines such as nursery development, plantation techniques, Silviculture operations, pest and disease management etc. which altogether leads to good qualitative and quantitative output in tree farming. The faculty gave lectures in a practical way which enabled us to learn and to do innovative things during our research work which will largely impact tree farming communities. This course is designed in such a way it creates potential to the students to solve various problems in forestry sector in future.

I am S.Preethi, currently pursuing M.Sc. Forestry in Silviculture and Agroforestry. This degree program has really been a interesting one where so far I have gained a very good and diverse acquaintance on various Agroforestry systems. Visits to various forest types gives exposure to various new forest which  helped me to comprehend different forests  . The ground level assessment studies on agroforestry models has helped me in understanding different management strategies and also has imparted awareness on usage of various techniques . This course will evolve me as a good forester.
