Seed play a vital role in sustained growth and development of agriculture sector. Availability of quality seed in adequate quantities is of utmost importance to reap the dividends of modern crop varieties. Since, the inception of Seed Science and Technology as a separate department in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, ample progress has been made for quality seed production and to address the problems of seed growers and seed industry, through technological backstopping in areas viz., seed production technologies, seed quality enhancement, seed testing and certification, seed processing, seed storage, seed health etc., As a result, the demand for quality seed of improved varieties is growing fast and adaptability of new technologies by the farmers are happening at an astounding pace.

Ph.D Courses
After admission the students undergo a set of courses that help them understand the basics of Seed Science and Technology as per the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with a total credit load of 76 credits, of which 45 credits are exclusively earmarked for their Thesis Research.
Doctoral thesis research
After completing the courses in the first year, the students start their thesis research. Each student is assigned to an experienced faculty, approved by the Dean of School of Post-Graduate Studies, who would guide the student on his/ her choice of research topic
Research internship
The students are exposed to several scientific events like symposia and conferences. Many are encouraged to have internship training at other institutes for a couple of months, either in India or abroad.
Seed Science and Technology in TNAU is multi-disciplinary subject which has courses connected to various aspects of seed science viz., seed production, certification and seed quality testing. Pursuing Seed Science and Technology had great scope for job opportunities in many scientific areas. It brings opportunities to place in many seed companies and also assist to develop entrepreneurship skill. The Department of Seed Science and Technology in TNAU have the best laboratory and field facilities which guide me to acquire practical exposure, excellence and skill development in academics.
I am fortunate to do my Ph.D. programme in Department of Seed Science and Technology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore which is well renowned institute for Seed Science and Technology. Along with well accomplished laboratory and field facilities, teaching from experienced performs and scientists guides me a lot to explore wide opportunities in Seed Science and Technology.
As alumni of Department of Seed Science and Technology in TNAU, I am fortunate to work as an Assistant Professor, SRM College of Agricultural Science, Chennai which is affiliated to TNAU during my academics in Seed Science and Technology, the knowledge on skill which I have developed through practical exposure helped me a lot for my career development.
