Ph.D. in Soil Science
Prelude
Soil Science & Agricultural Chemistry is one of the first few disciplines started in TNAU. The degree programme on Soil science is both a basic and applied science. It is an important branch of Agricultural sciences imparting thorough knowledge on the recent trends and advanced concepts of soil fertility, soil physics, soil chemistry, clay mineralogy etc. Besides the basic understanding about the soil development, physic-chemical and biological properties, advanced tools, techniques, equipments for soil fertility and productivity improvement is essential for successful and sustainable Agriculture. Hence this programme is planned to organize / provide teaching in Soil Science with a view to providing professional competencies for personnel at various levels in Central, State Government, Public sector undertakings and commercial agencies.
Why this programme?
- Providing teaching and research platform in applications of soil chemistry, soil physics, soil biology and pedology in the faculty of Agriculture, Horticulture, agricultural Engineering and Forestry.
- Impart knowledge to students to understand soil as a natural resource for sustenance of crop production
- Familiarize the formation, genesis of profile development and soil functions in order to preserve soil resources for future generations.
- To build ability among students on soil classification, soil behaviour and management aspects of soil fertility, soil chemistry and soil constraints.
- Undertaking research in Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry for promoting growth of knowledge in the discipline, contributing to the forming communities and providing guidance to development agencies.
Study Programme
The Doctoral programme in Soil Science has been designed following the UGC guidelines. The course imparts:
- Impart knowledge and skills to students on analytical methods, instrumental techniques, experimental methods, documentation and interpretation of experimental results for publication.
- Educate students on nutrient availability in soil, uptake and translocation of nutrient s in relation to yield and quality of crops and familiarize with diagnosis of nutrient deficiencies and appropriate correction methods.
- Academic partnership with industries and corporate sectors to involve doctoral students as student researchers in technology or product development programmes
- Orientation of faculty members through Human Resource Development to National and International scenario in post graduate curricula development on emerging areas.
- Special emphasis on strengthening of education to exposure the students to advanced technologies and novel areas of soil science
- Establishing smart delivery of fertilizer nutrients for sustained and input efficient crop production
- Serving the farming community and stakeholders through providing soil testing technology advisory services
- Developing technologies for the management of degraded waste lands and increasing the crop production

Doctorate in Soil Science Course
Doctorate Courses
After admission the students undergo a set of courses that help them understand the Advancements in Soil Science as per the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with a total credit load of 100 credits, of which 70 credits are exclusively earmarked for their Thesis Research.
Doctorate thesis research
After completing the courses in the first year, the students start their thesis research. Each student is assigned to an experienced faculty, approved by the Dean of School of Post-Graduate Studies, who would guide the student on his/ her choice of research topic
Research internship
The students are exposed to several scientific events like symposia and conferences. Many are encouraged to have internship training at other institutes for a couple of months, either in India or abroad.

I feel extremely privileged to be the part of this prestigious institution. I got opportunity to pursue my post graduation during 2018-2020 and doctoral programme during 2020-2023. During the course of time TNAU thought not only syllabus and curriculum but also life time experience. All the professors have shown the sweetness of soil science through their exemplary teaching and hands on experience on advanced instruments. The practical experience gained during the course of time was extraordinary.

Studying in this department has been a great time. With its immense beauty, it also has India’s best teaching faculty and labs which has helped me gain knowledge in soil science area. The department always helps me in every possible ways to achieve my dream. I obtained a student SRF scheme entitled “Environmental quality assessment in the use of paper board industry effluent wastewater in the use of agroforestry system”. This periods gave me a lot of confidence to sort out the problems related to environmental pollution. Here the potential is harnessed, skills are developed, and dreams are realized. On the whole, it was a fantastic journey and a memorable experience.
