Department of Food Science and Nutrition

Training on Viable Technologies are imparted to the stakeholders for commercialization.  The trainings are imparted to Farm women, SHGs, unemployed youth for their economic upliftment under mandatory trainings of departments and under schemes. Further support in terms of consultancy services, Incubation facilities, food safety and quality compliance etc. is extended for successful business ventures.

National Seminars, Workshops, Entrepreneurs Meet and Interactive sessions with Scientists from State, Central Institutes are being organised for the benefit of students, faculty, entrepreneurs and community.

Sensitization programme on Nutrition Week celebration, Hand Washing day, World Food, Breast Feeding Week, Agriculture Education Day, National Girl Child day, Women’s Day, Women in Agriculture Day are organized for students and farmers for creating awareness for better nutrition, health and holistic development.

Special emphasis are given on National Initiatives such as Swachh Bharath, Poshan Maah etc. involving Farmers, Students in rural areas, rural youths and Community level workers work one with the Government for realization of development goals.

Organizing Regional Agricultural Mela, Agri Expo, Agri Intex in Collaboration with State departments and NGOs to create awareness on Value added entrepreneurial ventures.

Bakery Unit, Fruit & Vegetable Processing Unit, Millet Processing Unit and Entrepreneurial Development Centre facilities available in the institute are used for student’s experiential learning and as Incubator centre for start-up agripreneurs.

Community Science College and Research Institute jointly working with Madurai Agri Business Incubation Forum (MABIF) focuses to commercialize food processing technologies, facilitating entrepreneurs in establishing food processing units and imparts skill to entrepreneurs on Food Processing ventures through technical consultancy and capacity building services.

AGPREUN Club with student members for improving their entrepreneurial skills, organizing ideation camps and running separate business units with guidance of Directorate of Agri Business (ABD), TNAU, Coimbatore has been established for  motivating students for entrepreneurship.

Venture Capital Scheme

The Venture Capital Scheme on ‘’Development of Nutritious Bakery Foods and Strengthening Capacity Building and Consulting Services to Stake Holders‘’ is being operated in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition since 08.04.2014 with the main focus of    production and sale of bakery products, development of entrepreneurial skills among students, research scholars, self help group members, rural youth and aspiring entrepreneurs, consultation and analysis of food products. Apart from the production of bakery products, regular training programme on diversified bakery products are imparted to the registered participants every month and other need based training programs also provided. Forty one training programmes on ‘’Bakery products’’ was imparted benefiting more than 500 registered participants from 2015- 2020 .

Incubating Facilities

The Incubating facilities for    bakery equipment such as Dough kneader, Baking oven  and bread Slicer  are available at Bakery unit on  payment basis.

Food Analysis  :

The Nutrient content of  cereals, millets , pulses , oilseeds ,perishable fruits and vegetables and processed products  are  analysed at a nominal fixed price approved by TNAU for the benefits of   students community, small scale entrepreneur,  food processing industrialist and other stake holders.

Consultation:

Consultancy services are also provided to the stakeholders such as aspiring entrepreneurs, industrialists, researchers on payment basis in  areas of value addition techniques, new food product development , quality analysis ,shelf life testing etc.,

Department of Human Development and Family Studies

This venture capital scheme is helpful for the stake holders who want to take startup in their fruit and vegetable value addition entrepreneurship. In the training programmes the programme schedule covered  product demonstration, standardization of the new products, nutrient content analysis, packaging and labelling, checking food qualities, hygienic practises, obtaining of Food certification (FSSAI), marketing technologies and cost calculation. Hence this is suitable for real entrepreneurs and business people and continually they are appreciating and clearing their doubts. Based on the facilities available more than 20 numbers of trainings were offered 170 beneficiaries were benefited. The beneficiaries are farmers from sivagangai district, Kanyakumari KVK farmers, ATMA farmers from Erode district, Kancheepuram and Thiruvarur and members of Small experts Association Galaxy Export training consultancy, Virudhunagar.

 The fruit and vegetable processing unit  is equipped with pulper, double jacketed kettle and boiling tank for syrup preparation with stainless steel working table. The unit is utilized for production of value added products for skill development and self confidence and also with a view to motivate entrepreneurship development to all the undergraduate students.
