B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry

Prelude

Realizing the pivotal role, the forests play in the economic prosperity and ecological stability of a country,   Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) started the Department of Forestry during 1973 as a forerunner to a College of Forestry.   Though mandated then to carry out research in agroforestry, plantation forestry and exotic forestry, the department also took up the responsibility of including a course in agroforestry in B.Sc. (Agri.) and B.Sc. (Hort.) degree programmes. With the passing of time and the concomitant multiplication of problems encountered by the State Forest Department, Tree Growing Farmers and Wood Based Industries and also to cater the needs a Forest Research Station encompassing an area of 200 hectares was started in February 1976 as an adjunct to the Department of Forestry in the sylvan surroundings of the Jakkanarai Reserve Forest at Mettupalayam.

Professional Forestry Education as a University degree programme was first introduced in the State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) in 1985 by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). TNAU was one among the five SAUs then identified by ICAR for initiating forestry education and research.

The main objective of graduate programme in forestry is to create professional manpower needs of the country in order to sustainably conserve and manage the forest. Besides the curricula is designed to create skill and expertise on plantation technology coupled with the associated value addition process.

The syllabi and curricula of B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry has been designed and developed in line with the recommendations of both ICAR & ICFRE accreditation systems. Currently, the semester system is continued with a paradigm shift in syllabi content and examinational pattern. The University revises the syllabi of Undergraduate programmes once in every four years based on the National and International demands in the field of forestry.
