The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) had its genesis from establishment of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Madras, Tamil Nadu, as early as 1868 and it was later relocated at Coimbatore.
The Department of Sericulture was established in 1989 as a separate department under the Directorate of Plant Protection Studies in TNAU, for the purpose of strengthening research, teaching and extension activities of the Sericulture sector in the State.
To develop human resources in sericulture for working as extension functionaries, targeted towards improving the socio-economic conditions of the sericulture farming community, the Undergraduate degree programme, B.Sc. (Hons.) Sericulture was started during 2011-12 in the Department of Sericulture, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore with a strength of 30 students per year. Later, the Department of Sericulture was shifted to Forest College and Research Institute, Mettupalayam in 2014. This degree programme has been notified as a professional education course from the academic year 2011-12 by the State government of Tamil Nadu.
The college has a team of well-experienced and qualified faculty to teach sericulture, agriculture, basic and allied science subjects to the students. Spacious and modern classrooms, laboratories, field facilities, seminar hall, library and other facilities are available for imparting quality teaching. Total quality management (TQM) is the guiding principle adopted at all levels.

I have completed my Bachelor’s degree in Sericulture at Forest College and Research Institute, Mettupalayam. During my studies in Bachelor degree, I have learnt technical skills in mulberry cultivation, crop protection, silkworm rearing practices and post-cocoon technology.
