Bachelor of Science in Horticulture

Prelude

The Faculty of Horticulture was established during the year 1971 with the formation of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The undergraduate programme B.Sc. (Horticulture) was started during the year 1972 and later in 1990, the Programme was shifted to the Horticultural College and Research Institute, Periyakulam. B.Tech. (Horticulture) was offered during the year 2002 to 2017. The B.Sc. (Hons) Horticulture again started at this college during 2018 onwards. Now B.Sc. (Hons) Horticulture is being offered from this college. This institutes functions with five departments to teach Horticulture courses to students of B.Sc. (Hons) Horticulture  offered at Horticultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore and also to the students various undergraduate programmes at TNAU, Coimbatore. For the benefit of Tamil medium students, the B.Sc. (Hons) Horticulture degree programme in Tamil Medium is started during 2021 as per the G.O issued  by Tamil Nadu Government

Study Program

Four year programme with eight semesters a well designed curriculum in current concept and covers a wide range of courses with equal distribution of horticulture and allied subjects. Expose the young buds in various fields of horticulture. Syllabus was periodically revised once in four years to suit the current expectations of stakeholders. The total credit hours of the degree programme is 180.  The academic calendar is prepared at the beginning of the semesterand midsemester is conducted at 52nd working day and the final practical commences on 91th working day and last working day of each semester falls on 105th day. As per the recommendation of the fifth Deans committee, the syllabus was framed and followed. Each courses are offered by the respective department and the head of the department also monitored the each course by them

Student Experiences

The overall feed back of the student about the degree programme falls under category of very good. All the students are being placed at state and central government and private sectors. The student placement in Horticultural officers in the state department of Horticulture (20%),  Entrepreneurs (15%), Landscape Horticulturist, Kuwait, Singapore, Organic consultant, Germany etc., Higher studies viz., M.Sc., MBA, MS (Arch) – 40% – Texas  University,  US Edinburg University, UK University of Western Australia, IIM Lucknow and IIM Bangalore.
