Dr. P. Paramaguru received his B.Sc. (Horticulture), M.Sc. (Horticulture) and doctorate in Horticulture from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. He has written four book chapters, 28 research papers in national and international journals, and 6 popular articles.

Horticultural College and Research Institute for Women, Tiruchirappalli is one of the constituent College of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University exclusively for women offering B.Sc. (Hons.) in Horticulture Degree. In Tamil Nadu state, women’s involvement in day to day agriculture is high and empowerment of women in horticulture/agriculture is vital for maximizing the productivity. The technical empowerment of women ensures economic empowerment in long run. There is a need to generate women horticulture, women entrepreneurs as value addition and post-harvest management are emerging as vital domains. Hence, this college would effectively address the challenges in research, education, extension and business domain.

This is one of the pioneering centres in India on problem soil, particularly sodic soils. Tiruchirappalli district is endowed with rich diversity of horticultural crops especially banana, betel vine mango and guava orchards. Srirangam is known for its commercial flower trade sustaining thousands of flower growers. This institute is effectively addressing the challenges faced by the farmers of Tiruchirappalli district.

The alkaline soil prevailing here leads way to the research on the screening of crops tolerant to sodic soil. The institute mainly emphasize on research related to the evaluation of fruits, vegetables, flowers crops and spices. Research in this institute is mainly focused on screening and identification varieties and genotypes with tolerance to sodicity in tropical horticultural crops to cater the needs of farming community as quite large cultivable land of Tiruchirappalli district is affected by sodicity.
