Horticultural College and Research Institute for Women, Tiruchirappalli a constituent college of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University was established in the year 2011 with a mission to develop women as technocrats in commercial horticulture and nutritional security in order to accomplish high productivity and economic self-sufficiency through education, research and outreach. This institute has set a long term vision to sustain excellence in low volume, high value horticultural crops for high remuneration to the growers and develop skilled man power and entrepreneurship in horticulture.

Horticulture plays a pivotal role in the food security and has emerged as one of the potential agricultural enterprises in accelerating the growth of economy. Its role in the country’s nutritional security, poverty alleviation and employment generation programmes is becoming increasingly important. It also provides ample scope for sustaining large number of Agro-industries which generate huge employment opportunities.

As far as Tamil Nadu state is considered, women’s involvement in day to day agriculture is 100 percent across the state. The empowerment of women in horticulture / agriculture is vital for maximizing the productivity. The technical empowerment of women ensures economic empowerment in long run. Hence, generating a pool of women technocrats with rich diversity of knowledge in high tech horticulture will foster the national economy.

Therefore, creating trained quality human resource in this sector is the main driver of comprehensive development, which is the greatest treasure of a nation. With this backdrop, Horticultural College and Research Institute for Women, Tiruchirappalli is offering four years B.Sc. (Horticulture) degree programme from the year 2011 to 2016 and from the academic year 2017 offering B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture programme exclusively for the women to generate adequate women graduates in horticulture to meet the future demand for horticultural development and admitted students from 2011-12 academic year onwards. A total number of 181 students were admitted for under graduate degree programme in this institute.

The Horticultural college and Research Institute for Women (HC&RI(W))  a constituent college of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University was established during 2011 in the Srirangam constituency at Navalur kuttapattu,  Tiruchirappalli. This institute is offering B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture programme exclusively for women to generate adequate women graduate in horticulture to meet the future demand for horticultural development. The curriculum is designed to develop candidates suitable for various sectors viz., agricultural extension, research, banking and private sector.

The institute provides comfortable learning environment by means of well established  academic block with scientific laboratories, modern digitalized class rooms, computer lab, exhibition hall, instructional farm, protected structures, ornamental garden, high density demonstration block in guava, modern library with huge volume of text books, e-recourses, well established auditorium, students counseling and placement, student club, new ladies hostel for comfortable stay with all amenities, sports and games facilities  etc., for holistic development of mind and body.

All India Study Tour

The final year students went for the All India Study Tour from 22.09.2018 to 07.10.2018. They visited Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Lal Bagh, Cuppon park, Bonsai nursery, Indo American Hybrid Seeds, Bengaluru, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, NBPGR, Rashtrapathi Bhavan gardens, Flower Auction centre, City landscape, Agra Fort, New Delhi, CPRI, Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Shimla, Pinjore garden, Rock garden, Rose garden, Chandigarh, International Horticulture Innovation and Training Centre, Jaipur.

Rural Horticultural Work Experience

Rural Horticultural Work Experience programme is being arranged for third year students of B.Sc.(Hons.) in Horticulture degree programme and they have placed at identified farmer’s field to learn the horticultural crop cultivation practices.

Experiential Learning Programmes

Experiential Learning Programme was offered in all major disciplines during VI and VIII semester. The following ELP courses have been offered during 2018-19.

  • EXP 301 Commercial nursery technology of  fruit crops (0+5)
  • EXP 401 Commercial production of bio-control agents (0+5)
